This is the latest novel from Amy Tintera, a NYT bestselling author of several YA novels that have been translated into 16 languages and sold in more than 20 territories.
Eight years ago, Lucy Chase was found wandering the streets covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood. Savvy was loved by everyone, and Lucy claims she can’t remember anything about that horrible night. Everyone in the small Texan town believed Lucy was guilty of murder, and the story went viral. Without enough evidence to convict her, Lucy moved to LA to start a new life. But now a hugely popular true crime podcast called “Listen for the Lie” and its handsome host, Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder. When Lucy returns home for her grandmother’s 80th birthday, she crosses paths with Ben. With all the negative attention once again focused upon her, Lucy has a chance to tell her side of the story, or what she remembers from that night. As Lucy and Ben work together to unravel the truth, some shocking discoveries are exposed, and Lucy suddenly has more enemies than she ever anticipated.
The storyline is captivating and unputdownable from start to finish. Throughout most of the plot, the audience is left wondering whether Lucy is guilty of murder. Her sardonic personality coupled with a nefarious voice in her head definitely depicts someone capable of murder, but the story is multi-layered, leaving many characters as suspects. There is an abundance of brilliant comical dialogue in the novel, making for a very entertaining listen. Lucy’s conversations with her grandmother are especially enjoyable and will definitely have listeners laughing out loud.
Narrator January LaVoy is at her absolute best in this book, delivering a performance with conviction, humour, drama, and intense emotion. She is so convincing in portraying Lucy that, at times, it feels like listening to the audio of an acclaimed feature film. Will Damron’s strong, complimentary performance of Ben is full of charisma and swagger, accurately portraying a confident young man who has a strong chemistry with Lucy. There’s a good reason this novel has been trending all over the place lately—it’s really that good! If you’re looking for your next unstoppable listen, don’t hesitate on this one!
