SYNOPSIS

This is the latest installment in the Frankie Elkin series by NYT-bestselling American novelist Lisa Gardner, author of more than 20 popular suspense novels.

Frankie Elkin, who’s become notorious for finding missing people, has been summoned to a women’s prison in Texas to hear a plea from a serial killer on death row. Killer Kaylee Pierson has received a lead on the whereabouts of her sister, Leilani, who was kidnapped over a decade ago, and needs Frankie’s help to find her. Unable to resist another rescue, Frankie takes on Pierson’s request. Kaylee believes her ex-boyfriend and tech mogul, Sanders MacManus, kidnapped Leilani. Frankie is then flown to a remote Hawaiian island, the site of MacManus’s future resort, where he makes regular appearances, to learn more about Leilani’s whereabouts. There, Frankie goes undercover and begins to meticulously interrogate her fellow staff members at the isolated base camp. Before long, MacManus arrives with teenage Leilani by his side, and Frankie is determined to help save her. But as many dangerous secrets come out, Frankie has to reevaluate everything. When a storm rolls in and an unexpected terror arrives with it, Frankie and the others become trapped on the remote island and are in more danger than they ever imagined.

REVIEW

The storyline is completely original and captivating from the first chapter on. Gardner provides sufficient backstory on Frankie’s past that this audiobook can easily be listened to as a standalone. Frankie is very flawed, often struggling with her own internal conflicts, but she still presents herself as a fiesty, determined woman, never shying away from confrontation or uncomfortable conversations. In fact, her ability to confront her enemies head-on with so much opinionated sarcasm makes for a very entertaining and hilarious listen! Gardner presents a complex and interesting ensemble of characters, often leaving her audience wondering who can’t be trusted. There are several dark themes in the story, including abuse, alcoholism, and graphic murder, but since the plot is fast-paced and filled with plenty of adventure, the overall feel of the story remains exciting. The story culminates with a lot of unexpected twists and thrilling action scenes that make this one an unstoppable listen.

Narrator Hillary Huber demonstrates her immense talent and elevates the story to a whole new level. Huber draws in listeners from the very beginning with a very convincing performance of Frankie, filled with drama, unnerving tension, and well-placed comic relief. If you’ve enjoyed the previous Frankie Elkin books or are looking for a fast-paced suspenseful standalone listen or read featuring one serious bad-ass female protagonist, then don’t hesitate on this one! The audiobook is definitely the way to go. You’ll be thoroughly entertained!
