This is Audiobook Fanatic’s first listen from Rachel Hawkins, the acclaimed author of several young adult thriller and romance novels.
Heiress Ruby McTavish, North Carolina’s richest woman, is famous for being the victim of a child kidnapping and a widow four times over. When she died, she left everything to her adopted son Camden, most notably Ashby House, the family’s estate in the town of Tavistock, high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But Camden, estranged from the family, wants nothing to do with the house, the money, or the remaining family members. He and his wife, Jules, have instead settled for a modest life in Colorado. But Jules is aware of his inheritance and has plans of her own to persuade Camden to claim what’s rightfully his. When the couple are summoned back to Ashby House to work out legal matters, Jules is instantly enchanted by the beauty of the estate and surrounding land and puts her long-awaited plan into action. At the same time, confessional letters written by Ruby about her life and marriages are revealed. What follows is a tantalizing sequence of secrets being exposed, and suddenly no one is safe at Ashby House!
This is an addictive and captivating storyline from start to finish. The twists are laid out cleverly throughout, and they keep coming right until the very end. The epilogue is particularly satisfying, with additional twists that the listener didn’t even know they needed but will appreciate!
The ensemble of narrators is perfect for the storyline, allowing different voices to not only convey the various flawed characters but also the different eras of the story. Eliza Foss’ performance of Ruby is particularly noteworthy, as she brings such exuberant life to the performance and allows listeners to feel a great number of emotions for this tragic and devious character. If you’re looking for an unputdownable listen with a compelling storyline and a fantastic ensemble of talented narrators, look no further than The Heiress!
