SYNOPSIS

This is the second and most successful novel from author Amanda DeWitt, who also worked in a public library and holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.

It’s the beginning of senior year, and Wren Martin has been upgraded to student council president, and he’s determined to fix the problems at Rapture High. Since he is asexual and also weary of school resources being wasted, his first mandate is to abolish the annual Valentine’s Day dance. Unfortunately, Martin’s frenemy, Leo Reyes, has been named vice president and has his own ideas for the dance. To solve the school’s budgetary problems, Leo suggests the school seek sponsorship from Buddy, the anonymous “not a dating” app that is very popular with the students. When Buddy agrees to sponsor the dance, Wren and Leo are suddenly in charge of organizing the biggest event of the year. Out of sheer curiosity, Wren signs up for the app and soon begins developing feelings for an anonymous match. As Wren and Leo are forced to work together, Wren begins to realize that Leo’s life is far from the perfect picture he imagined. Wren’s conflicting feelings for Leo and his anonymous Buddy match soon cause him a big dilemma. As the dance approaches, Wren and Leo come to terms with their new relationship, but it seems too much for both to bear.

REVIEW

The audiobook is an extremely easy and entertaining listen. Listeners are immediately drawn into Wren’s world, and all the charming characters at Rapture High are quickly introduced. The story is refreshing and original, but it also incorporates a lot of contemporary teenage jargon and realistic social media content. The book definitely has the potential to appeal to a wide YA audience with its likeable characters and abundant witty humour. The novel may be touted as a romance, but you may find yourself laughing out loud at some of the hilarious dialogue, especially the sarcastic comments coming from Wren.

Narrator Mark Sanderlin is the absolute perfect choice of narrator for this book. Sanderlin’s voice and easy-listening tone are ideal for portraying intelligent and opinionated Wren, and Sanderlin delivers a great variety of comical, dramatic, and emotional narration between all the characters. It’s no wonder that this book has been well received so far. It has all the elements of an appealing YA romance, but where it excels is in its humour!
