This is the debut novel from writer Bruce Jacobs, a beekeeper who resides in Utah with his family.
Fourth grader Zeke Zooter has been guilt-ridden since his father died and is having recurring nightmares. He is the fourth great-grandson of Irish cobbler Riley Brogan and has inherited a talisman that grants him 13 wishes. When a leprechaun arrives in his bedroom and tells Zeke that they must travel to Ireland to save the country from Ireland’s fairy queen, the Morrigan, Zeke learns more about his ancestry. The Morrigan has detected Zeke’s use of the talisman and is hot on his trail. Soon Zeke, his friend Dexter, the leprechaun, and a mysterious girl named Daphne ventured to Ireland in pursuit of destroying the Eye of Balor. The Eye of Balor is an evil power that the Morrigan needs to overthrow Ireland and claim for her legion of evil fairies. In Ireland, Zeke and his companions must pass three dangerous tasks in order to locate the Eye of Balor. But there’s much deception at play, and Zeke and his companions are in more danger than they know!
This story is captivating from beginning to end. Although the book is categorized in the middle grade genre, it is also suitable for older listeners as it explores more mature themes such as addiction, loss, and guilt. The many exciting magic-infused combat scenes in the novel will also be appreciated by older audiences, including adults. The story is very fast-paced and full of adventure throughout. For fans of Terry Brooks’ Shannara series, Zeke’s first task is somewhat reminiscent of Brooks’ Hall of Kings and definitely has an epic feel to it.
Jacobs also does an excellent job narrating the audiobook, giving listeners a great balance of drama, excitement, and emotion throughout. Jacob’s narration of Zeke’s relationship with his father is especially authentic and heartfelt. If you’re in the mood for an Irish fantasy adventure this St. Patrick’s Day season, definitely give this one a go! Listeners of all ages will surely enjoy it.
