This is my first listen to Kacen Callender, author of the award-winning novel Felix Ever After.
When Logan Grey, Hollywood’s bad boy, and Matthew Cole, Hollywood’s new golden boy, are cast as romantic leads in a new film, Logan is interviewed, denouncing Matthew’s talent, and the film is destined for failure. To turn things around for the film, the two actors are persuaded into a fake-dating publicity stunt. As the two actors begin working together and spending more time together, real feelings blossom and an authentic relationship develops. Several scandals are then revealed to the public, bringing further turmoil to the film, and the actors are instructed to follow a set timeline of events before they announce a public breakup. Logan’s past trauma plays a key factor in his terrible decision-making and causes much upheaval.
The storyline is very straightforward but incorporates several complex themes, such as abuse, coming out, self-acceptance, and mental health. Callender depicts a toxic Hollywood filled with pretentious sexualized characters and relentless paparazzi—a world not far from the truth! Social media also takes centre stage throughout the novel, accurately portraying how the images of public figures can change in an instant when negative information goes viral and how it affects the mental health of many people involved. The book definitely has its triggers and lots of darkness, but the overall tone of the novel is quite positive, especially when listening to the segments of Matthew’s future memoir.
The ensemble of narrators is a perfect choice for this type of novel. André Santana and AJ Beckles deliver compelling and authentic performances of Logan and Matthew, often drawing listeners into uncomfortable conversations with raw emotion and captivating expression. The conclusion is somewhat predictable but is executed in a very heartfelt manner. Fans of Alexis Hall and Adam Silvera who are interested in a more mature listen will especially enjoy this one!
