SYNOPSIS

This 2021 instant bestseller is always trending at Christmas, so Audiobook Fanatic thought it’s finally time to give it a listen.

Carmen has just been let go of her long-term retail job, and her concerned mother suggests she move in with her polar opposite and ultra-successful sister Sophia in Edinburgh. Neither sister is thrilled with the idea, but Sofia, who is expecting her fourth child and in need of some help, obliges. Sophia also needs Carmen to help save a client’s failing retail business. Soon, Carmen is swept away by the picturesque streets of Edinburgh and working at an ancient bookshop for Mr. McCredie. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming, and soon Carmen uses her magic to breathe new life into the shop and turn a profit. Simultaneously, an arrogant author and a local professor both become regulars at the shop and take turns wooing Carmen’s heart.

REVIEW

While author Jenny Colgan does a formidable job at describing the charming Christmas magic of Edinburgh, the story itself is quite simple without any dramatic turning points. On the upside, the book is full of Scottish humour, some ridiculous texting, and quirky literary references that listeners will enjoy.

Narrator Eilidh Beaton is extremely impressive in her performance of all the various English and Scottish accents.

As you may expect, the book definitely has a Hallmark movie feel to it, so if that’s your cup of tea during the holiday season or you’re looking to take a break from other genres, don’t hesitate to give this one a listen!
