This is Audiobook Fanatic’s first listen from former federal prosecutor turned author Michele Campbell.
Harvard law student Madison Rivera lands the internship of her dreams, working for her longtime role model, Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has neglected to tell Kathryn that her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested for drug possession after learning that Kathryn is the judge in his case. Meanwhile, Kathryn has a whole world of secrets and ulterior motives for hiring Madison. Danny soon goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, and Madison is pressed by her frantic mother to get answers from her new boss. The two women suddenly begin a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, and both their survivals become greatly at risk.
The story is fast-paced and action-packed from start to finish. It’s quite evident that Campbell weaves her own experience of studying at Harvard Law and working as a federal prosecutor into the story, giving listeners a realistic and fascinating insight into that world. The writing quality is excellent, and the plot is very original.
Narrator Sarah Mollo Christensen delivers a riveting and emotional performance as both Madison and Kathryn, flawlessly portraying two very different, strong women who will go to extremes for their loved ones. The ending, although a bit abrupt after such a well-laid-out storyline, still manages to bring a satisfying closure for listeners. If you’re looking to start off the new year with a well-paced, captivating suspenseful listen, look no further than The Intern!
