REVIEW

This self-help book is a fantastic listen for anyone looking for effective and inspirational relationship advice, including singles, new couples, long-term partners, and married partners.

What sets this book apart from other self-help books is that it includes a personal memoir from the author, an abundance of humour, and interviews between the author and her husband, showcasing their different perspectives on relationship advice.

The book includes 16 entertaining and enlightening chapters, beginning with Cyndi’s relationship history and failed first marriage, the initial “meet-cute” with her current husband, and the couple’s backstory leading up to their marriage. From there, each chapter discusses different aspects of relationship health, from what love really means in a partnership to the value of maintaining attractiveness in a relationship to the crucial importance of intimacy currency exchange.

While Cyndi does most of the narration, she frequently discusses the topic of each chapter with her husband Andy, and every chapter concludes with his personal experiences and insightful advice. It’s fascinating to listen to such contracting characters and the different advice they have to offer, especially given how rock-solid their marriage is. Both Cyndi and Andy both demonstrate a vast amount of emotional maturity and respect for each other, which they both admit took them years to develop.

The later part of the book discusses how to maintain a healthy relationship once it’s established. The overwhelming message that all relationships are constant “works in progress” and need persistent attention is emphasized throughout the novel. Lewis provides a plethora of advice and guidance, from checklists to key points to real-life experiences on how to keep a relationship in a good place.

This is definitely a book that you should be prepared to take notes on, as there’s tons of inspirational guidance that can be universally applied. Much of the advice is simple and uncomplicated, but still eye-opening and very captivating. Chapter 15 is an especially great chapter to be jotting down some notes, as both Cyndi and Andy provide some summarized key points about keeping a relationship going strong.

Overall, this is an excellent and highly unique self-help book. The audiobook is the ideal format for enjoying this book as you get to hear everything directly from the author, and it’s fascinating to hear her speak her story with such authenticity in her voice. Plus, the banter between husband and wife is extremely engaging and hilarious—you’ll be laughing, smiling, and fully immersed while listening! Don’t hesitate to read or listen to this book if you’re looking for relationship advice!
