Worst Case Scenario is the 2024 book release from T.J. Newman, a former bookseller and flight attendant whose first novel, Falling, became a publishing sensation and debuted at number two on the New York Times bestseller list. Her second novel, Drowning was a an instant New York Times bestseller. Both books will soon be major motion pictures after selling in two separate headline making seven-figure deals: Falling with Universal Pictures, and Drowning with Warner Brothers. T.J. lives in Phoenix, Arizona.
When a pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet, a commercial airliner filled with passengers crashes into a nuclear power plant in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, which becomes ground zero for a catastrophic national crisis with global implications. The International Nuclear Event Scale tracks nuclear disasters. It has seven levels. Level 7 is a Major Accident, with only two on record: Fukushima and Chernobyl. There has never been a Level 8. Until now.
In this heart-stopping thriller, ordinary people—power plant employees, firefighters, teachers, families, neighbors, and friends—are thrust into an extraordinary situation as they face the ultimate test of their lives. It will take the combined courage, ingenuity, and determination of a brave few to save not only their community and loved ones, but the fate of humanity at large.
Worst Case Scenario is another thrilling, action-packed, and emotionally intense book from T.J. Newman. Like her other books, this story is perfectly designed to be an unstoppable audiobook listen. The story gets right into the action as a pilot experiences a heart attack in midair and the plane is doomed to crash. From there, there is relentless action and suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seats!
This book is different from Newman’s previous books in that this isn’t about a plane rescue mission. This plane crash occurs at the very beginning of this story, and the story follows several characters on the ground, managing the crisis of a potential catastrophic explosion of a nuclear power plant. As in Newman’s last book, Drowning, there are elements of a water mission in this book, not in the ocean but instead in a pool that is leaking radioactive waste. The stakes are definitely high as the clock ticks down towards the hour of potential worldwide disaster, and readers can literally feel the palpable tension through Newman’s excellent writing.
There are a large number of the characters in this book, from the flight crew to the firefighters to townspeople linked to the power plant to even the President of the USA! The story is written from an omniscient perspective, allowing readers to experience all the different anxieties and emotions of the different characters and their situations, making for a very captivating read! While all of these perspectives keep the story constantly moving, some readers may become irritated at how often the story jumps around. After enormous intensity and a great buildup of many parallel storylines, the ending feels quite abrupt and doesn’t provide enough resolution for all the characters. It would be more beneficial to have an additional chapter or epilogue for a more satisfying conclusion.
Overall, this is a book that is captivating, suspenseful, emotionally intense, and fully entertaining. If you enjoy thrillers with relentless action, a large cast of compelling characters, palpable tension, and heartbreaking moments, then this is the book for you! T. J. Newman’s previous two books are both being adapted into big-budget films, and it will very likely be the same for this book! In the meantime, the best way to indulge in her books is by listening to the audiobooks, which are expertly narrated and well worth a listen!
