Paradise hides a deadly secret.
When Abby steps foot on Isla Colel, she isn’t sure what—if anything—she’ll find. She only knows that she needs to see the place where her fiancée, Eszter, died to try and make sense of the tragic accident.
The island is nothing like Abby expected: Though it was once a bustling tourist hub, a hurricane has left it a shell of its former self, with only a handful of residents remaining. Even the once-daily ferry to the mainland now runs every week or so.
There, Abby befriends an alluring group of expats, but her sense of unease surges when one of them says he knows the truth about Eszter’s final days. Before he can tell her more, though, he vanishes from the island. Hours turn to days with no sign of him, and the others are chillingly cavalier about his disappearance.
As her quest for the truth unearths dark secrets, shady pasts, and a web of lies, Abby grows more determined than ever to find out what happened to the love of her life. And the deeper she gets in the close-knit expat community, the more she suspects that one of them is Eszter’s killer—and will do anything to keep the truth buried. But will Abby discover who it is before she becomes the island’s next victim?
The Last Ferry Out is a slow-burn psychological thriller that pulls readers in with its fresh, character-driven narrative. The story follows Abby, who travels to Isla Colel, a Mexican island that’s become desolate after a hurricane, to seek closure over the death of her fiancée, Eszter. Eszter died there of an allergic reaction under mysterious circumstances while working on a humanitarian project. Upon arrival, Abby encounters a group of enigmatic expats who knew Eszter and begins to suspect that her death was not accidental. When one of the expats, Brady, sends her a text telling Abby she needs to know the truth about Eszter’s death and then disappears, Abby’s need for answers intensifies. Abby soon realizes someone is willing to kill to keep the past buried, and that she may be their next target!
The story features multiple timelines that alternate between Abby’s present-day investigation on the island and past flashbacks that provide insight into the complexities of Abby and Eszter’s relationship and the secrets held between them. The flashbacks often come after chapters that end in cliffhangers and provide a respite from the claustrophobic tension unfolding in Abby’s mind and on the island. Bartz’s writing is very descriptive and immersive, making this a book readers can easily binge. The story’s atmospheric feel, along with the emotional depth of Abby’s character, makes the narrative very compelling. The tropical island vibes of Isla Colel really shine through. Readers really get a sense of being on a getaway with Abby as she walks the quiet streets and tropical beaches, overlooks the limestone cliffs, and observes the island wildlife. The beauty of the island is also juxtaposed by a shroud of apprehension when Abby discovers the abandoned resort hotel and the mystery that comes with it!
The book has a large cast of characters, from the expats to suspicious townspeople to Abby and Eszter’s family members—it’s a great idea to jot down character names to keep track of everyone. Most of the side characters are not overly developed but they all seem to be keeping crucial information from Abby. On the contrary, Abby is very well developed, and the story includes many of her inner monologues that allow readers to understand the depth of her emotional pain and need for answers. It’s easy to root for her and feel empathy—but keep in mind nothing is exactly as it seems in this story, so be prepared for surprises to emerge about each character by the end!
Abby‘s paranoia causes her to see threats and danger at every turn. She takes bold actions to get answers, some of which are impulsive and put her life in danger. As Abby gets to know the expats, she soon realizes that each of them has fled a past they’d rather forget and is here to start a new life. Every time she interrogates them, readers learn something suspicious or new information about her fiancé’s last days, or—it really is a story where knowing who is innocent and who isn’t remains a mystery until the very end! Eszter is the daughter of Hungarian immigrants, and her decision-making is often motivated by her desire for her parents’ approval—the very opposite of Abby, who advocates for Eszter to find her own way and become self-sufficient. Despite their chemistry and strong bond, readers may wonder if their differences would eventually lead to the demise of their relationship.
The pacing is a bit uneven—it definitely has a slow-burn start and takes time to build momentum, but once the key characters are all introduced & Abby befriends the expats, the pace quickens and the story becomes much more intriguing. In the second half, the story culminates with a sudden harrowing scenario, clever plot detours, and ghastly scenes that feel like a fever dream—all intended to keep readers guessing and the tension high. The final chapters provide a satisfying resolution and a brilliant twist readers won’t see coming. While some may argue the ending is too long, readers will appreciate that Bartz provides resolution for all the small plot holes and puzzling details, something not often done in similar thrillers!
Overall, The Last Ferry Out is a captivating thriller that builds in momentum and complexity throughout. While it may not provide edge-of-your-seat suspense, it offers a gripping, character-driven narrative and a haunting setting that will keep readers furiously turning the pages. Fans of Bartz’s previous books and those who enjoy suspenseful stories about love and loss or slow-burn mysteries in isolated settings should consider this book!
