SYNOPSIS

Jenna, who runs a successful private therapy practice, still struggles with trust issues of her own. She’s made a promise to stop snooping in her husband Colten’s phone, but sometimes she can’t help herself. One night, she discovers a troubling exchange between him and his cousin Bodie, who’s one of his closest friends. A dancer from a bachelor party they both recently attended is threatening Bodie, claiming they crossed a line sexually and that she’ll expose the truth to his family if she doesn’t get what she wants. They don’t know much about this woman, or how far she’s willing to go. But Jenna might.

Lexus Chardonnay, the stage name of the dancer from the party, is one you don’t forget. And Jenna’s heard it before—from one of her clients.

Kaitlyn is a medical school student who dances on weekends to put herself through school. Jenna’s been her therapist for years, except she hasn’t seen her for three months. Not since Kaitlyn stopped showing up for treatment, without explanation. As Jenna begins to listen back to their past sessions, desperate for answers, a more complicated picture emerges, and she must decide who to trust as her career and her family hang in the balance.

REVIEW

This Is a Safe Space is a psychological thriller in audiobook-original format. The story follows Jenna, a therapist who discovers a troubling message on her husband Colten’s phone tied to a dancer from a bachelor party. That dancer—Lexus Chardonnay—turns out to be someone Jenna recognizes: one of her own former clients. Kaitlyn, the client, is a med-school student who’s been missing therapy sessions for three months. As Jenna reviews their recordings, secrets emerge—and professional boundaries blur.

This is a short listen at only 3 hours and 40 minutes, with short, addictive chapters that often end in cliffhangers. The audiobook is very high quality—similar to Lucinda Berry’s last audiobook original, “One Of Our Own”—and it feels much more immersive, real, and engaging than a standard thriller. For all these reasons, it’s definitely a book that all readers can finish in a single sitting!

The story is fast-paced throughout and has multiple, interwoven POVs that all feel very immersive—although most of the story is told from the first-person POV of Jenna. If you’re looking for a thriller that gets moving quickly and has all the elements of a fully fleshed-out thriller plot but without the repetitive inner dialogue or regurgitated scenes, then this one is for you! Even with its short length, it still delivers an intricate plot, multiple thriller tropes, lots of domestic drama, and plenty of twists—including a final twist that even the most seasoned thriller readers won’t see coming!

Overall, This Is A Safe Space is an emotional, suspense-filled listen that is perfect for anyone looking for their next bingeable thriller or a book that can be read in a single sitting. It’s also a great option for anyone needing to get out of a reading slump, as its compelling characters and delicious domestic drama will surely get your literary passion reawakened again!
Narrator Performance

The audiobook of This Is A Safe Space is a full-cast dramatized production featuring talented voice actors Danielle Savre, Alicia Crowder, Dan Bittner, Matt Godfrey, and Janina Edwards!

Actress Danielle Savre narrates the majority of the audiobook, portraying protagonist Jenna with a methodical, determined voice—the character’s past instability is apparent in the wavering unease in Savre’s tone, especially when the character is making tough decisions. Savre’s engaging performance makes it easy for listeners to root for Jenna—and she brilliantly shifts her performance towards the end to convey a stronger, more reflective character, which is very satisfying!

All of the other narrators perform their characters perfectly—Dan Bittner portrays Jenna’s husband, Colten, using a smooth, overly confident voice that makes the character equally compelling and suspicious. Actress Alicia Crowder portrays Caitlin with an emotional and anxiety-ridden voice, making the character the ultimate unreliable narrator—and someone whose motives listeners will question! Matt Godfrey voices the character Bodie, whose phone conversations and dramatic scenes at the end are perfectly performed with lots of emotion and dramatic flair—almost bordering on hysteria at times to make for a very entertaining listening experience! Janina Edwards voices a supporting character (at the end) with a calm, engaging voice that is pleasant to listen to!

Overall, this audiobook’s full-cast narration gives each perspective a distinct emotional texture—tense, vulnerable, or sly—so the secrets and hidden agendas come alive in real time! Audiobook enthusiasts looking for their next twisty thriller that they can devour in a sitting should immediately add this one to their lists!
