SYNOPSIS

One hot August night in 1993, a young couple go to a party. When their car breaks down, they are picked up by a truck driver who attacks the man and abducts the woman. She is never seen again. That woman was Fiona Green’s mother. When the trucker, Eddie Ward, is caught, a mass grave of bodies is discovered in his backyard but Fiona’s mother isn’t there. Thirty years later, on his prison deathbed, Ward insists that he didn’t kill her, so Fiona finds herself back in the small town where her mother disappeared. Fighting demons of her own, she’s shocked when history repeats itself: another woman, another roadside breakdown, and another disappearance. Only this time the primary suspect is Jason Ward, Eddie’s son. Desperate, Fiona hunts down answers, unaware that she is being drawn into a dangerous trap. With Jennifer Fawcett’s signature “suspenseful and immersive” (Library Journal) prose, Keep This for Me is a fresh, spellbinding exploration of what we unwillingly inherit from our parents and how one random act can send ripples years into the future.

REVIEW

Keep This for Me is a slow-burn, atmospheric literary thriller that combines psychological suspense, family drama, generational trauma, grief, and (serial killer) murder mystery in a compelling dual timeline structure. It’s also a very unique take on how a person’s disappearance continues to haunt those left behind—and murder mystery fans will be intrigued the whole way through!

The story follows Fiona Green, a woman who has spent her adult life trying to outrun the trauma of her mother’s disappearance thirty years earlier. Her killer, convicted on circumstantial evidence, now lies dying in prison and makes a shocking claim: he didn’t do it. Drawn back to the lakeside community she’s avoided for decades, Fiona returns to confront the ghosts of her past and the people who were once part of it.

Most of the characters are complex, flawed, morally grey, and suspicious. Fiona is a very compelling protagonist that readers will empathize with—she’s haunted by more than just her mother’s disappearance—she’s juggling her own identity, motherhood, and the fear of inheriting dangerous mental illness. In another POV, readers get to know Jason Ward, the son of Fiona’s mother’s convicted killer, from his early days living with (and being influenced by) his deranged father to his adult years, where he’s determined to keep the darkest parts of him at bay. Both characters share the common question of whether one’s past dictates one’s future—and readers will have to be patient in the slow-burn unraveling to judge either accurately. The supporting cast—including Fiona’s father, childhood friend David, unstable Ana in her own timeline, and the stories of the murdered women—all make the story more intriguing & psychologically unsettling. The shifting POVs and flashback scenes keep the story alive, but it may sometimes feel like the characters occasionally remain at arm’s length.

Those who are expecting a typical slow-burn thriller with multiple reveals/twists throughout may be a bit unsatisfied. This book reads more as a literary suspense novel, keeping readers invested by its compelling characters, themes, and murder mystery—there are a few thrilling scenes, but not many. The book really takes its time in the first half, allowing the lake-town setting and emotional stakes to settle in. But the shifting timelines and multiple POVs will keep readers furiously turning the pages. The story culminates in a high-stakes, thrilling confrontation, but the final twist is somewhat predictable, especially for seasoned thriller readers. Readers will also have to suspend their disbelief at some plot points, but the climax does still offer a satisfying emotional reckoning! The ending is really open to interpretation—it may have been even more interesting if the ghost context mentioned earlier on was better drawn out—but it’s still an ending that lingers!

Overall, Keep This for Me is a gripping, emotionally charged literary suspense novel and a great entry point into Jennifer Fawcett’s writing. Its powerful questions about inheriting mental illness, generational trauma, and motherhood will resonate with many. It’s perfect for readers who love slow-burn thrillers with rich, complex characters, atmospheric settings, and literary emotional weight. The audiobook version is the recommended format, as all three seasoned narrators elevate the story to a new level!
Narrator Performance

The audiobook of Keep This For Me is an atmospheric, immersive listen narrated by award-winning narrators Amanda Dolan, Graham Halstead, and Carlotta Brentan. As a combined team, they bring to life the story’s dual timelines and clearly differentiate characters.

Amanda Dolan performs the majority of the narration and does a standout job, voicing protagonist Fiona using an intelligent, haunted-sounding voice that conveys the character’s trauma, emotional burden, and investigative determination (to get the truth of her mother’s disappearance). Carlotta Brentan voices the young mother Ana’s timeline using a soft, unsteady voice. As Ana finds herself in sudden danger, Brenton subtly shifts her performance—the softness becomes edged with fear and determination, putting listeners on edge and allowing them to feel Ana’s emotional unraveling!

Graham Halstead narrates the serial killer’s son, Jason’s POV, using a grounded, reserved voice that feels burdened and anxious underneath the surface, perfectly capturing the character’s internal conflict and demons he’s trying to keep at bay. Halstead maintains a calm voice for Jason in most scenes, but when Jason’s internal conflict or confrontation arises, Halstead adds cracks in his voice and a more sinister-sounding tone to keep readers guessing about the true nature of the character! It’s a nuanced portrayal and never overdone, which is perfect for an unsettling psychological slow-burn thriller!

All three narrators pace their sections well and match each other well—they don’t rush the slower, atmospheric build-up, and they pick up the pacing and intensity when the stakes rise. The distinct voices of each narrator help keep the dual-timeline structure clear—even though there are constant shifts between Fiona’s present, Jason, and Ana’s past, listeners will never feel lost.

Overall, the narrators’ top-notch performances of their characters, expert pacing, and wide range of emotional intensity make the audiobook edition of Keep This for Me the recommended reading format! The multi-narrator approach especially suits the story’s shifting timelines, and the performances carry emotional weight as well as suspense, elevating the story to a whole new level! This is a recommended listen for anyone who enjoys atmospheric psychological thrillers (with literary themes), multiple POVs, and immersive, high-quality multicast performances—and as an added bonus, you get to hear the performance of three seasoned audiobook narrators!
