REVIEW

The Inheritance is a sci‑fi/fantasy survival thriller that will keep readers fully immersed from start to finish! The story is set in a near-future Earth that’s been overrun by interdimensional breaches—portals that connect monsters and alien ecosystem worlds to ours. The breaches have an LitRPG/dungeon-crawl game-like vibe to them, with escalating threats and problem-solving as humans traverse them!

The story follows Adaline “Ada” Moore, a government assessor who dives into breaches to locate rare resources. But a routine mission goes horribly wrong, leaving her trapped inside a lethal alien cavern with only a scared German Shepherd named Bear for company. With limited supplies, horrifying alien threats, strange ecosystems, and strange new abilities waking up within her, Ada must battle monsters and confront her fears to find a way out—because she promised her kids she would return!

Ada is the unlikely hero readers can’t help but root for. She’s a middle-aged single mom who’s ferociously determined, intelligent, and brave when she needs to be. The harrowing journey in the breach and the gift she receives from a mysterious alien woman with superhuman powers transform her both physically and emotionally—and readers will be in awe of her character arc by the end! Her sidekick, Bear the German Shepherd, isn’t just a traveling companion—she’s become Ada’s anchor, emotional support, and an equal partner in the fight for survival—and readers will adore her as much as Ada does! There are some great side characters and villains in this book, many of whom are well developed. In particular, Elias McFeron, the guildmaster whose team was lost with Ada, is weighed down by bureaucracy and responsibility but is driven to get into the breach to see if anyone is still alive. Meanwhile, the traitors who left Ada trapped are flawed. morally gray characters that Ada is determined to punish if she ever makes it out alive—and readers will find them just as despicable!

The pacing is steady and gets faster towards the end. Once Ada begins traveling through the tunnels of the breach, the excitement really ramps up—high-stakes battles, problem-solving, terrifying monsters, seemingly endless cavern mazes, and survival challenges create an addictive, immersive reading experience that will leave readers breathless at times! The story culminates in a high-stakes showdown where shocking secrets are revealed. The ending is a major cliffhanger with so many questions unanswered—fortunately, book 2 is in the works, which will most definitely be an auto-read for most people who read this book!

Overall, The Inheritance is a tense, highly original sci‑fi fantasy adventure that will leave readers craving more. This book was originally planned as a standalone novella, but as it was written, it evolved into something more complex and fascinating—and the world-building potential is really limitless! Readers who love strong, gritty female protagonists, rich worldbuilding, and intense survival stories should grab a copy of this book!
Narrator Performance

The audiobook of The Inheritance is a thrilling, immersive listen narrated by seasoned narrators Hillary Huber and James Konicek, a strong pairing for a dual-narrator audiobook like this one!

Huber gives a nuanced performance as protagonist Adaline “Ada” Moore. She gives Ada a determined, clear voice with just enough grittiness and edge to it that perfectly conveys Ada’s weariness from a life of breach expeditions and single motherhood. Once Ada begins travelling through the dangerous caverns, Huber’s performance becomes more dynamic—she adds more tension and deepens her tone during battle scenes and terrifying encounters, allowing the listener to fully feel all of Ada’s fear, determination, and intelligence—and some scenes are so immersive that it feels like a LITRPG/dungeon-crawl game book! When Ada speaks in the alien language during visions or while communicating with alien beings, the language sounds so fascinating and convincing—and the words don’t sound easy to pronounce, but Huber’s delivery is effortless!

James Konicek voices Elias McFeron and other male POVs, using a rich, steady baritone voice that contrasts nicely with Huber’s portrayal of Ada. His portrayal of Elias is calm and authoritative, perfect for a leader-type character who needs to be grounded and strategic during a chaotic situation. Konicek also provides distinct voices and personalities for all the characters he voices, making it easy for listeners to always know who’s speaking, even in fast-paced scenes. Both narrators pace with mostly quick pacing to match the story, but nothing ever feels rushed. Huber slows down her pacing for Ada’s vision and inner monologues, which allow the listener room to absorb all the complex details and emotional unraveling that are being thrown their way! For a story as intricate as this sci-fi fantasy, listeners will be surprised at how effortlessly they can follow along and enjoy every moment—without ever needing to slow the playback—a true sign of standout performances!

Overall, the narrators’ complementary performances, convincing character portrayals, and masterful pacing bring the story vividly to life, making the audiobook fly by—and leaving listeners desperate for the next installment, especially after the cliffhanger ending! Here’s hoping Book 2 arrives sooner rather than later—and that both narrators return to reprise their unforgettable roles! Listeners who crave character-driven sci-fi, vivid worldbuilding, and strong female leads will devour this audiobook, especially with a narrating duo that brings every emotion to life!
