SYNOPSIS

Everyone at Chantilly’s Bar noticed out-of-towner Camille Bayliss. Red lips, designer heels, sipping a Negroni. But that woman wasn’t Camille Bayliss. It was Aubrey Price.

Camille Bayliss appears to have the picture-perfect life; she’s married to hotshot lawyer Ben and is the daughter of a wealthy Louisiana family. Only nothing is as it seems: Camille believes Ben has been hiding dirty secrets for years, but she can’t find proof because he tracks her every move.

Aubrey Price has been haunted by the terrible night that changed her life a decade ago, and she’s convinced Benjamin Bayliss knows something about it. Living in a house full of criminals, Aubrey understands there’s more than one way to get to the truth—and she may have found the best way in.

Aubrey and Camille hatch a plan. It sounds simple: For twelve hours, Aubrey will take Camille’s place. Camille will spy on Ben, and the two women will get the answers they desperately seek.

Except the next morning, Ben is found murdered. Both women need an airtight alibi, but only one of them has it. And one false step is all it takes for everything to come undone.

REVIEW

Anatomy of an Alibi is a twisty psychological thriller with marital drama, dual identities, buried secrets, and corrupt wealthy families. The story follows Camille Bayliss, who hails from a powerful family and suspects her lawyer husband, Ben, is hiding something. He’s been keeping track of her movements, and so she hatches a plan with bartender Aubrey Price. For twelve hours, Aubrey will pretend to be Camille so Camille can spy on Ben. What starts as a risky exchange of identities turns into a full-blown crisis when Ben is found murdered the next morning. Suddenly both women need rock-solid alibis—and only one of them actually has one!

All the characters are complex and morally grey. Camille learns about Aubrey after finding a suspicious file on her husband’s desk with her picture and name. Suspecting Ben is having an affair, she confronts Aubrey—only to discover a much more complex, twisted mystery is at work—and one that will keep readers constantly guessing! Camille and Aubrey come from completely different worlds—one surrounded by privilege but feeling stuck, the other scrappy and driven, trying to uncover the truth about what really happened to her parents. Their uneasy alliance and conflicting goals create a mistrustful dynamic where each woman is questioning the other’s motives. Because the story jumps around quite a bit (switching POVs and timelines), there’s not enough character development of either woman to be emotionally invested in them. Both women are deeply flawed, but Camille is the harder one to like. In her inner monologues, she pushes all the blame onto her husband and father for their corruption, refusing to acknowledge the role she’s played herself—which makes it difficult at times for readers to truly empathize with her! Hank, Ben’s straight-arrow law partner, enters the mix alongside a cast of shady townsfolk whose hidden motives deepen the mystery and steadily raise the stakes!

The story is told primarily through Camille, Aubrey, and Hank’s POVs, allowing readers to get different perspectives on the mystery and to delve into each character’s psyche. The pacing is propulsive with short, punchy chapters that keep readers flipping pages. The story also includes flashbacks from a younger Ben’s perspective that add depth and reveal key details but sometimes arrive abruptly and may feel confusing if you’re not fully paying attention. The ending includes a major, out-of-nowhere twist that neatly ties everything together—but it might have landed better if it were more tied to the key players. The final scene is very clever and will leave readers with a smile on their faces!

Overall, Anatomy of an Alibi is an original thriller with lots of psychological suspense and morally complex characters that will keep readers guessing! It’s a perfect book for fans of authors like Megan Miranda or Riley Sager and anyone who enjoys puzzle plots with shifting perspectives that are difficult to put down!
Narrator Performance

The Anatomy of an Alibi audiobook is a multicast production read by seasoned narrators MacLeod Andrews, Saskia Maarleveld, Amanda Stribling, and Dan Bittner! Saskia Maarleveld gives protagonist Camille an intelligent, sophisticated voice with underlying vulnerability. During Camille’s time spent watching her husband in secret, Maarleveld makes Camille’s frustration and mounting fear tangible, making her more of a multi-dimensional character! The dialogue between Camille and Aubrey is a highlight as Maarleveld emphasizes their mutual unease and mistrust in their relationship, which keeps the tension high. Dialogue scenes with Camille are paced naturally and distinctly, helping listeners stay immersed in her unraveling story. As the story unfolds and Camille faces betrayal and danger, Saskia adds subtle shifts in her tone to convey her growing desperation. By the end, Camille’s voice has a hint of resignation along with determination as she’s forced to accept certain truths but is determined for a new start—the performance mirrors Camille’s arc perfectly and adds emotional depth to the story.

Amanda Stribling portrays Aubrey with a gritty, determined voice that conveys her resilience and internal turmoil. It’s a dynamic performance that makes the character more likeable than some of the others—Aubrey is playful and funny around her male friends and shows interest, but she is fiercely determined and sharp when it comes to solving the mystery of her parents’ deaths, and her story feels real and compelling.

MacLeod Andrews does a standout job portraying Hank using a steady, grounded voice that instantly makes him feel trustworthy and principled, even amid all the chaos. Andrews’s performance portrays Hank as someone genuinely seeking justice rather than personal gain, making him the most likeable character in the book. Andrews subtly shifts his delivery to be more dynamic during Hank’s internal struggles, adding in more tension, frustration, and quiet determination in the character’s voice.

Dan Bittner’s portrayal of young Ben in the flashback scenes is full of charm and high energy, making the character more likeable and relatable—a sharp contrast to the morally compromised adult he becomes. Bittner’s use of a lighter, more open tone perfectly captures Ben’s good-natured personality, curiosity, and naivety, allowing listeners to see the man he might have been under different circumstances! The flashback scenes of Been sometimes come abruptly, but Bittner expertly paces them well so that listeners can adjust and reengage in the story without any confusion!

Overall, this multicast narration elevates the story and gives texture and depth to the characters, far beyond what a solo narrator could offer. Listeners who enjoy character‑driven thrillers with multiple narrators who give convincing character portrayals and work with synergy that keeps the mystery gripping, clear, and emotionally resonant will really love this audiobook!
