SYNOPSIS

Social media influencer, Elly Parker, had the perfect life, that is until she discovered her husband had been having an affair with her best friend.

But as hurt, betrayed, unmoored as Elly is, she has made it her mission to help others in need. Even strangers.

When Elly meets a man on the steps to the subway platform, crutches in one hand and a yellow suitcase by his feet, she can’t help but feel sorry for him.

Just as he planned.

This small act of kindness sets off a change of events more terrifying than anything she ever could imagine.

To survive, Elly will need to convince the world what happened to her was real. She needs a lawyer who can bend the rules to find the truth. Eddie Flynn and his team must find the stranger with the yellow suitcase. But little do they know this cunning killer is a master manipulator and is always one step ahead.

REVIEW

Two Kinds of Stranger is a high-stakes legal thriller and the ninth installment in the Eddie Flynn series. If you haven’t read the earlier books in the series, it works perfectly as a standalone—there’s enough backstory about Eddie and his backstory to quickly get you up to speed. This entry isn’t just courtroom drama. It’s equal parts psychological suspense and framed-murder mystery, featuring a truly despicable serial-killer antagonist and an intricate, twisty plot that keeps you guessing until the very end!

The story follows Elly Parker, a TikTok influencer known for broadcasting her acts of kindness, whose life implodes after she live-streams her husband cheating with her best friend. Seeking a fresh start, she helps a stranger outside Grand Central Terminal—only to be poisoned. She wakes in the hospital with no memory of the attack and finds herself accused of murdering her husband and best friend. With the evidence stacked against her, she turns to defense attorney Eddie Flynn, who soon uncovers signs that a calculating serial killer is orchestrating everything from the shadows.

The story is told through multiple POVs, primarily shifting between Elly and Eddie, while also giving readers chilling access to the sociopathic mind of Logan, the serial killer, and his eerie, calculated reasoning. Even new readers will quickly sense that Eddie has undergone a major transformation—from con man to brilliant, respected defense lawyer. His risky, unorthodox tactics and rough-around-the-edges charm make him very compelling. His complicated relationship with his ex-wife Christine and their teenage daughter adds emotional weight, especially when they face legal trouble of their own and one of Eddie’s close colleagues steps in to defend them. Meanwhile, Elly’s journey—from confident influencer to vulnerable, determined survivor—is the emotional core of the story, as her trial becomes a media spectacle with the odds firmly stacked against her. You’ll need to suspend your disbelief at times when it comes to serial killer Logan’s inner monologues. When a romantic subplot has him experiencing something resembling love, his decision-making starts to feel questionable—especially for someone portrayed as a sociopathic master manipulator.

The pacing starts off a bit slow, but that’s actually in favor of new readers getting up to speed with Eddie and his world. Short, punchy chapters frequently shift POVs, many ending on hook cliffhangers that make it perfect for a one-sitting read. Once the trial begins, the momentum becomes relentless. Dramatic courtroom testimonies, a race-against-time investigation, and chilling glimpses into the killer’s POV unfold rapidly, requiring close attention to keep track of everything. In the second half, red herrings, detours, and unexpected reveals keep the story alive. While the final twist may feel predictable to seasoned thriller readers, it’s executed well and so satisfying that you won’t mind!

Overall, Two Kinds of Stranger is a gripping legal thriller that works brilliantly as a standalone while also serving as another strong installment in the Eddie Flynn series. It continues to evolve Eddie’s character arc, hinting at an uncertain future that will leave readers eager for more. Perfect for fans of courtroom drama, psychological suspense, complex characters, chilling serial-killer antagonists, and intricate framed-murder mysteries, it packs a lot into one book—but the ride is absolutely worth it!
Narrator Performance

The audiobook of Two Kinds of Stranger is narrated by Adam Sims, an award-winning narrator known for his work on thrillers and crime fiction. Sims has narrated all of the Eddie Flynn books, giving a consistent and recognizable voice to fans of the series!

Sims portrays Eddie with a steady, slightly rough voice that captures his confidence, intelligence, and charm. In courtroom scenes, when Eddie is interrogating witnesses, Sims’ precise delivery brings out Eddie’s quick thinking and sharp wit, keeping listeners engaged. For Elly, Sims softens his tone, giving her an intelligent and expressive voice that conveys both vulnerability and determination. He adds subtle cracks to her voice to reflect fear, while also layering in resilience, particularly in the hospital and trial scenes. The dialogue between Eddie and Elly is especially immersive and highlights the stakes for both characters.

In contrast, Sims gives Logan, the serial killer, a controlled, cold, and eerily calm tone. His delivery makes Logan’s inner monologues feel disturbingly intimate, pulling listeners directly into his twisted, calculating, sociopathic mind. Sims also gives distinct voices to the large supporting cast—Eddie’s colleagues, his ex-wife, and his teenage daughter all feel real and distinct. Sim’s pacing mirrors the story, making the entire audiobook feel cinematic and an extremely enjoyable listen from start to finish!

This audiobook is perfect for listeners who enjoy fast-paced legal thrillers and psychological suspense with complex, flawed protagonists, chilling villains, and outstanding narration that brings the characters to life and keeps you on the edge of your seat!
