After years of struggling, I never expected someone like Evan Sinclair to walk into my life.
Confident, charming, and well-dressed, I couldn’t believe it when he asked me – a waitress at a diner – to go out with him.
He swept me off my feet, offering me a life I never imagined – a luxurious apartment, new clothes, a world beyond my wildest dreams. For the first time in years, I thought I was finally happy.
But as our relationship deepens, things start to change. Evan’s love comes with strings attached: unspoken rules, decisions made for me, and a creeping sense of control. The more I try to hold on to this perfect life, the more I feel like I’m losing myself.
Evan won’t talk about his past. His temper flares if I even ask about it. And when I find out the reason why, I wonder if I’ve made a terrible mistake.
I thought this new life was everything I wanted. Now, I’m scared I won’t be able to get out before it’s too late
If you haven’t read Rowen Chambers’ books before, this is a decent place to start. It’s a fast, easy-to-follow domestic thriller, reminiscent of Freida McFadden-style writing. It has some great thriller tropes that will draw in popcorn thriller fans—poor girl meets rich man, perfect man, whirlwind romance, controlling boyfriend, hidden past, and gaslighting. There’s nothing groundbreaking, and this may not be the author’s best work, but it’s still bingeable—especially in audiobook format, where Erin Bennett’s performance keeps the tension alive the entire time.
Grace, a waitress dealing with money stress and health issues, meets Evan Sinclair, a wealthy, confident man who seems almost perfect. He quickly pulls her into a life of luxury and constant attention—but what feels like a rescue slowly turns into control. As Evan becomes more possessive and secretive, Grace starts to lose her independence while still convincing herself it’s love.
The entire story is told in Grace’s 1st-person POV, which lets you constantly know what she’s thinking. It opens with a suspenseful prologue before jumping back six weeks to show how everything escalated to that point. Be prepared to be frustrated by Grace—she’s an unreliable narrator, doesn’t always come across as particularly self-aware, and repeatedly ignores obvious red flags. Her best friend Jenna, who works with her at the diner, is the voice of reason she constantly dismisses. The dynamic between Grace and Evan is the focus of the book—he’s charming, persuasive, and SO clearly controlling, but Grace is swept away by a new luxury lifestyle and the over-the-top affection he gives her. Add in Evan’s mother, whose presence unravels secrets, causing the tension to escalate. Unfortunately, several scenes and arguments feel repetitive, and you may end up wanting to smack some sense into Grace. On the positive side, the cast is small, which makes the story very easy to follow, and you really get to understand each character’s motives.
The short chapters and relatively fast-moving plot help keep the book engaging, and even with repetition, the momentum is strong. If you’re paying attention, some of the bigger twists—especially the final one—are predictable. The ending does give some satisfying closure and redemption for Grace, but the last chapter ends quite abruptly and could have been written more effectively.
Fans of domestic suspense, unreliable narrators, controlling relationship plots, and fast, addictive reads will enjoy this book—even if they find themselves rolling their eyes at Grace’s decisions!
Narrator Performance
The audiobook of Behind Closed Doors is read by award-winning narrator Erin Bennett. At the beginning, she gives protagonist Grace an open, trusting voice—especially in her inner monologues where Grace believes Evan is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change her life. Bennett makes you hear how easily she gets swept up by him and ignores all the red flags—the delivery emphasizes Grace’s gullibility, and you may find yourself wanting to scream at her for poor decisions! As things start to feel off for Grace, Bennett gives her more of a hesitant, conflicted tone, like she’s starting to see the warning signs but won’t accept them.
In contrast, Evan is given a calm, controlled, and polished voice—almost too polished—which makes him feel unsettling and questionable right from the start. She adds a subtle menacing undertone during his brief moments of losing control, and you immediately get a sense of what’s hiding underneath!
Bennett also does a great job giving secondary characters distinct voices and personalities, which makes the audiobook feel almost like a multicast production. When Evan Sinclair’s mother enters the story later on, she increases the tension in her delivery, adding extra suspense to those scenes.
Bennett paces the story brilliantly, and even during some of the more repetitive dialogue between Grace and Evan, her delivery keeps the momentum going. Overall, this audiobook is perfect for anyone looking for an addictive popcorn thriller that doesn’t require much effort to follow!
