SYNOPSIS

In this humorous collection of personal stories and vignettes, “Tales of an Unserious Truthteller”, David Conte recounts thirty quirky stories from a life lived slightly sideways. From a fan mail letter to author David Sedaris and his snarky reply via postcard, to a nude spa visit in Germany with his wife, to a toilet catastrophe at a friend’s Manhattan apartment, to a summer spent mopping floors at his old high school, to getting his rental car burglarized in Sicily, Conte mines the indignities and small disasters of ordinary life for everything they’re worth.

REVIEW

This book is so original and engaging, unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s a short, fast-moving book made up of autobiographical vignettes that read like a collection of everyday misadventures and travel diary entries—mostly from the author’s own experiences. I loved the unconventional structure, totally entirely different from a traditional memoir. Each chapter drops you into a different moment of David’s life and they’re not in chronological order but jump between different stages of his life—from his teen years in the 1990s through the decades. The stories also take place in a variety of locations, including Amsterdam, Germany, Vienna, Boston, and New York City!

Each episodic vignette is told from David’s 1st-person POV, which helps immerse you in each tale and gives you a sense of his wit and self-deprecating humor. And even though each is short and reads as a standalone, there’s continuity through David’s life, travels, and family across the collection. The stories range from only a few minutes to just over ten minutes (in audio format), making the book perfect to enjoy in bite-sized segments or to binge-listen in a single sitting. Every chapter has a clever or funny title that reflects what the story is about, and many of them end with a witty quote or satirical reflection from David—almost like a punchline or an ironic piece of advice inspired by his experience. I found myself laughing out loud several times during the ridiculous events in some of the stories, as well as at David’s closing remarks.

Despite the lack of chronological order, the stories gradually give you a fuller picture of who David is—his marriage to Kathleen (who appears in multiple stories), his children (Charlie and Thomas), his health challenges, his time living in different countries, and the strangers and unexpected events that have stayed with him.

The entire audiobook runs just under three hours—a perfect listen for a commute, a vacation, or a relaxing weekend because each story stands on its own and is easy to dip in and out of. Some of the most memorable stories are the shared experiences between David and his wife at different points in their relationship and in different settings. It’s hilarious to see how differently they react in certain situations and how sync they are with each other.

In “Vienna & My Valentine,” David suggests to his wife that they travel to Vienna for Valentine’s Day, where they attend a ball and attempt to waltz, mixing romance with comedic awkwardness.

In “Saturday Night Spa: Undisguised,” David and his wife visit a German spa, where David shares his culture shock in a way that’s both hilarious and eye-opening.

In “Rolling in Amsterdam,” David and his wife tour Amsterdam and end up in a café connected to Ocean’s Eleven, creating an atmosphere that feels both surreal and wonderfully absurd.

In “Take the Cannoli,” David and his wife travel through Sicily, where an unexpected surprise leaves them temporarily scrambling, but David handles it in hilarious fashion and even shares some funny advice afterward.

Other standout vignettes include “A Panic Attack Sends Me to the ER“ (a chaotic and comedic medical incident); “My Grandfather the Goodfella” (David’s memories of his grandfather, complete with subtle mobster lore); “Rare Autograph and Interview” (David imagines himself becoming a source of wisdom during a period of unemployment in New York); and “Stephen King Now Uses ChatGPT!” (a hilarious fictional email exchange between David and Stephen King’s wife).

What ties all of these stories together is just how relatable they are and how engaging David’s storytelling is. It feels like listening to someone you know recount stories from their life, with humour and just the right amount of reflection to make ordinary moments very entertaining. If you’re looking for something short, light, original, and very entertaining, this book—or audiobook (the format I recommend)—is a great choice!
Narrator Performance

Tales of an Unserious TruthTeller is read by seasoned narrator Ed Fairbanks. He gives protagonist David a voice with a perfect balance of satire and authenticity, immediately pulling you into the performance and making David feel relatable. At the end of each tale, the narration emphasizes the satirical quote or ironic micro-bite slice of wisdom offered, making even these tiny stories feel like they have closure.

Fairbanks’s great comedic timing is a highlight of his performance—his use of small pauses and shifts in tone help make the humor feel organic, like listening to a friend relay a ridiculous tale from their life. At the same time, the consistency of his voice, always sounding like David, the narrator of the tales, no matter what stage of David’s life is being shared, makes all the stories easy to follow and the audiobook flow seamlessly.

Another highlight of the narration is how vividly Fairbanks narrates the travel and shared experiences between David and his wife. In stories like Vienna & My Valentine, the narration captures both the beautiful setting and the awkwardness David feels when attempting a waltz at a formal ball, making this particular tale both elegant and chaotic. Another example is in Saturday Night Spa: Undisguised—the German spa experience that David shares with his wife is delivered with a perfect mix of hilarious discomfort and eye-opening culture-shock comedy that I found very amusing!

There are also subtle reflective moments in the tales—David’s small observations about life, happiness, health, parenting, or indulgence—and Fairbanks narrates these moments in a way that sounds convincing for David’s age and stage of life. In lighter or outright comedic stories like A Mishap at a New York Apartment and The Stink, Fairbanks fully commits to the comedy with a more sarcastic, animated delivery that conveys the absurdity of what David‘s experiencing—and you’ll likely find yourself laughing out loud! 😂

Overall, Ed Fairbanks’ performance is a major part of what makes the audiobook so enjoyable. His consistent performance across all the tales and ability to effortlessly shift between satire, observational humor, and reflection bring each story and setting to life. It’s the perfect listen for a commute, a vacation, or a relaxing weekend sitting, especially if you’re in the mood for some laughs and small doses of life wisdom!
