REVIEW

The Final Scene is a fast-paced psychological captive thriller with elements of grief, captivity horror, and emotional survival. The story centers around Brooke, who is kidnapped as she heads home from work and spends ten years in a remote Oregon cabin, forced to reenact scenes from her captor’s distorted childhood. She is one of three unwilling captive “cast members” who are forced to act out their character roles to stay alive. Meanwhile Mina, a novelist still grieving from loss and spending time at a vacation home nearby, sees a girl in the house across the road who seems to be in trouble, sending her down a dangerous path.

The story is fast‑paced, with short chapters and multiple POVs, weaving together Brooke’s captivity with Mina’s parallel storyline and the arrival of Derek—the new captive who plays the role of father figure. Each narrative thread builds tension toward the novel’s final act. The pacing is relentless and will keep the reader furiously turning the pages, engrossed in the twisted story and unbelievable turns and twists. Because of the pacing and shorter length, most readers can easily binge-read this in a day, breathlessly anticipating the climactic “final scene”! The book’s storyline of forced role‑playing from the villain’s past memories is highly original and unsettling. As unbelievable as some of the theatrical captivity scenes are, readers will be engrossed by just how twisted the premise is!

Brooke is a formidable protagonist—after being held in captivity for a decade, her ability to endure so much trauma and remain resilient makes her a character that readers will be emotionally invested in—outwardly rooting for her escape and praying for the downfall of her devilish captor!

Derek is a calming, supportive presence for Brooke, and their chemistry is tangible and obvious to everyone around them. The romance subplot between them sometimes interrupts the tension in the story—for better or worse, depending on the reader’s preference. Their intimate moments toward the end, when the stakes are high and time is running out, are a bit far-fetched. The villains in this story, Grace and Mitch, are extremely unlikable. Readers don’t get a clear understanding of the motivations behind their actions or Mitch’s unwavering loyalty to Grace until late in the story—and even then you’ll have to suspend your disbelief to give them full credibility. But they will both likely invoke strong emotional reactions from readers and keep the intensity constantly high!

The parallel storylines of Nina and Brooke come crashing together in the second half, and the stakes suddenly escalate tenfold! When things do not go as planned, the rules rapidly shift, people are killed off, and tension rises into a climax that comes fast and furiously—the ending that follows feels a bit rushed and too neatly tied up, lacking substantial payoff. But if you appreciate edge-of-your-seat thrills and cinematic suspense, the final scenes will definitely hit the mark! There is also a bonus epilogue available from the author that does offer more satisfying closure.

Overall, The Final Scene is an emotional survival thriller with relentless psychological tension. It’s perfect for readers craving a fast-paced, boundary‑pushing, and highly original story.
