This second novel in the Maid series by Canadian author Nita Prose has received mostly positive appraisals, so I decided to give it a listen.
Molly Grey, devoted Head Maid at the Regency Grand Hotel, is thrust into another terrible predicament when acclaimed author Mr. Grimthorpe suddenly dies while giving a speech in the hotel’s grand ballroom. Detective Stark, Molly’s old foe, returns to investigate and is quickly suspicious of foul play. All the maids and staff of the hotel are prime suspects, along with an eccentric group of women that are part of the author’s fan club. The story toggles between the present and Molly’s childhood when she worked with her Gran at the Grimthorpe mansion.
Many of the original characters return with just as much humour and enthusiasm as in the first book. Molly’s continued flair for good grammar, perfect cleanliness, and odd conversational skills will make you laugh out loud more than a few times.
Narrator Lauren Ambrose returns to deliver another hilarious and fully entertaining performance of Molly and all the colourful characters in the story. Overall, the storyline is not as captivating as its predecessor, but it still has just as much charm and humour to keep you listening and even wanting a further nstallment. If you’ve read the original book or are looking for a lighthearted mystery with plenty of clever puns, definitely give this one a listen!
