SYNOPSIS

Red, White & Royal Blue meets The Nightmare Before Christmas in a sexy, quirky rom-com where the golden-hearted Prince of Christmas falls for the totally off-limits Prince of Halloween.

Nicholas “Coal” Claus used to love Christmas. Until his father, the reigning Santa, turned the holiday into a PR façade. Coal will do anything to escape the spectacle, including getting tangled in a drunken, supremely hot make-out session with a beautiful man behind a seedy bar one night.

But the heir to Christmas is soon commanded to do his duty: he will marry his best friend, Iris, the Easter Princess and his brother’s not-so-secret crush. A situation that has disaster written all over it.

Things go from bad to worse when a rival arrives to challenge Coal for the princess’s hand…and Coal comes face-to-face with his mysterious behind-the-bar hottie: Hex, the Prince of Halloween.

It’s a fake competition between two holiday princes who can’t keep their hands off each other over a marriage of convenience that no one wants. And it all leads to one of the sweetest, sexiest, messiest, most delightfully unforgettable love stories of the year.

REVIEW

The Nightmare Before Kissmass is a whimsical romantasy comedy and the first book in the Royals and Romance series. The book has been touted as Disney’s The “Nightmare Before Christmas” meets “Red, White, and Royal Blue,” but this book has its own very unique narrative. The book centers on Nicholas “Coal” Claus, the Prince of Christmas, who becomes disillusioned with the commercialization of the holiday under his father’s reign. A chance encounter with Hex, the enigmatic Prince of Halloween, sets the stage for a heated romance that challenges traditional holiday boundaries. When Coal’s father unexpectedly arranges a marriage between Coal and Iris, the Easter Princess, leading to a fake competition for her hand, Coal and Hex are forced into political games. The story features some popular romance tropes, including rivals to lovers, forbidden love, forced proximity, and opposites attract. Raasch’s writing is both witty and poignant, capturing the essence of holiday spirit while delving into the complexities of love and duty. The inventive world-building in this book introduces readers to a world where each holiday operates as a unique realm, complete with its own court and traditions. Most of the plot takes place in Christmas court in the North Pole, and the lavishly depicted regal setting provides a perfect backdrop for the unfolding romance and political drama.

The story includes a wonderful cast of characters, each with vibrant and unique personalities. If you were to judge this book by its cover, you may assume this is a YA book when in fact it’s not, especially with its complex political ideologies and spicy scenes tailored for adult romance readers. Even still, Cole and the other “heirs” do sometimes come across as YA, especially in their group chats and playful banter. The sibling relationship between Coal and his brother Kris is heartwarming and hilarious, reminiscent of teenage siblings supporting each other through difficult times. Coal’s journey of self-discovery and his struggle against familial expectations add depth to his character, but he’s also a character that readers may develop a love-hate relationship with. While he adamantly refuses to adhere to his father’s corrupt agenda, his melodrama and constant outspoken insecurity make him very irritating at times. Hex is not only the prince of a polar opposite holiday but also has a contrasting persona—his confident, mysterious allure and calm, spoken demeanor complement Coal’s earnestness. From their first encounter as strangers in a seedy bar, the chemistry between Coal and Hex is palpable. When they become reacquainted in the Christmas court, their interactions evolve from rivalry and sarcastic banter to deeply emotional exchanges.

Even though there is a substantial romance in this book, it’s not the focal point of the story. Overall it’s a story of family drama, political ploys, and a plot to reconstruct Christmas. The story also includes some meaningful commentary on the monopolization of holiday joy that is a metaphor for how Christmas joy in our own world is used as a tool for holiday consumerism, far exceeding any other holiday. The author does a great job balancing lighthearted moments with these more serious themes to make for a very engaging and interesting read.

Overall, “The Nightmare Before Kissmas” is a charming holiday romance that will appeal to readers seeking a festive story with elements of fantasy, romance, and royal family antics. Raasch’s creative take on holiday lore, combined with her memorable characters and a highly original plot, makes this a standout novel for both Halloween and Christmas seasons. Narrator Ellis Evans does a fantastic job bringing the characters so vividly to life, each with distinct voices and personas, giving the audiobook the feel of a multi-cast production. If you’re looking for a unique holiday read and enjoy romance, fantasy, and family drama, give this book high consideration!
