SYNOPSIS

Kim and Grant are at a turning point. A couple for thirty years, their “separate but together” partnership is running up against the realities of late middle age: Grant’s mother has died, the college where he taught philosophy was shuttered, and their twin girls are grown and gone. Escaping the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter for the hot desert sun of Palm Springs seems as good a solution as any to the more intractable problems they face.

When they arrive at Le Desert, a quirky condo community where everyone knows everyone’s business, Kim immediately embraces the opportunity to make new friends and explore a more adventurous side of her personality. Meanwhile, Grant struggles to find his footing in this unfamiliar landscape, leaving Kim to wonder if their relationship can survive the snowbird season. But when Grant goes missing on a hike in the Palm Springs mountains, Kim is forced to consider two terrifying outcomes: either Grant is truly lost, or this time, he’s really left her.

Is it ever too late to become the person we wanted to be—and is there still time to change into someone better? The exhilarating, but often confusing transitions of midlife are pitched against the promise and glamour of Palm Springs in this tender, honest story of what it takes to commit to someone for a lifetime. With compassion and humor, Clancy explores the redemptive power of finding ourselves, and of being found.

REVIEW

The Snowbirds is a heartfelt family drama that delves into the complexities of long-term marriage amidst midlife crises. The story centers on Kim and Grant, a couple together for thirty years, who decide to escape the harsh Midwestern winter by relocating to Palm Springs, California. When they arrive at the quirky Le Desert condo community, they meet an eclectic mix of people that lead them on a path of self-discovery and to reevaluate their partnership. When Grant goes missing after a hike in the mountains, Kim is forced to imagine a future without him and contemplate what she has taken for granted.

The vibrant Palm Springs setting is the perfect backdrop for this midlife crisis getaway story. The blend of glamour and eccentricity, along with adjacent palm trees and mountains, mimics the contrasting personalities and different needs of Kim and Grant. The setting also serves as a mirror to their internal transformations, and their character arcs are very pronounced by the end. The “snowbirds” in a sense serve as a metaphor for Kim and Grant’s newfound freedom and resilience.

The story is full of richly developed, colorful characters. Kim’s ex-spouse, Basil, who now lives an openly gay life, is still a key part of her life and offers his Palm Springs condo for a winter vacation. Once in Palm Springs, Kim and Grant meet a gay couple who take them out dancing and introduce them to some eclectic characters, including a spiritual guru named Cassie who provides intriguing insight into their fractured relationship. Meanwhile, Kim and Grant are authentically portrayed as they struggle with the uncertainties of late middle age. Kim’s embrace of new experiences contrasts with Grant’s struggle to find his new footing. Their interactions with the characters they meet in Palm Springs are a catalyst for their personal growth and the next stage of evolution of their relationship!

The pacing of the story is a balance of moments of introspection and high-tension scenes. This is a book that is meant to be read at a leisurely pace, to relish the complexities of the characters, their relationship conflicts, and their transformations—if you’re expecting a high-suspense mystery or a family drama thriller, you‘ll be disappointed. One of the central themes that is well illustrated in this book is that it’s never too late to embrace change and reinvent yourself. The move to Palm Springs forces Kim and Grant to confront their past choices, push past old belief systems and stubbornness, and envision new possibilities. By the end, they have to decide whether they will take on new directions together or solo—a very realistic conflict of long-term marriage dynamics.

Overall, “The Snowbirds” is a beautifully written literary fiction novel with elements of mystery and romance—Christina Clancy has crafted a story that lingers after the final page. Acclaimed narrators Karissa Vacker and Graham Halstead vividly bring the characters and vibrant Palm Springs setting to life and elevate the story, making the audiobook the recommended format for enjoying this book. Fans of rich characters, atmospheric settings, and powerful stories of transformation will enjoy this book!
