Duration : 9 Hours 32 Mins

Publisher : Penguin Audio

SYNOPSIS

Despite managing bookstores on the same Boston street, Josie Klein and Ryan Lawson have never interacted much—Josie’s store focuses on serious literature, and Ryan’s sells romance only. But when the new owner of both stores decides to combine them, the two are thrust into direct competition. Only one manager will be left standing, decided by who turns the most profit over the summer.

Efficient and detail-oriented Josie instantly clashes with easygoing and disorganized Ryan. Their competing events and contrasting styles lead to more than just frustration—the sparks between them might just set the whole store on fire. Their only solace during this chaos is the friendship they’ve each struck up with an anonymous friend in an online book forum. Little do they know they’re actually chatting with each other.

As their rivalry heats up in real life, their online relationship grows, and when the walls between their stores come tumbling down, Josie and Ryan realize not all’s fair in love and war. And maybe, if they’re lucky, happily ever afters aren’t just for the books

REVIEW

The Battle of the Bookstores is a charming romantic comedy that pays homage to the world of bookstores. With its abundance of bookish language, it’s perfectly tailored to book lovers. The story features several popular romance tropes, including enemies to lovers, opposites attract, forced proximity, shared bed, and slow-burn romance!

Set in Boston’s literary scene, the story follows Josie Klein, the meticulous manager of Tabula Inscripta, a bookstore specializing in literary fiction, and her rival bookstore neighbor Ryan Lawson, the laid-back manager of Happy Endings, a romance-exclusive bookstore. When their owner decides to merge their stores and announces that only one manager position will remain, Josie and Ryan are thrust into a summer-long competition to drive the most sales. Unbeknownst to them, they’ve also been chatting on an anonymous book forum, leading their relationship on a classic “You’ve Got Mail” scenario.

The characters in this story are charming, opinionated, and intriguing. Josie is meticulous, hardworking, and independent—but also very set in her ways. Having been neglected by her mother and without a father, she was forced to grow up quickly and be the caretaker of her sister. On the contrary, Ryan’s easygoing, eccentric outlook on life is reflected in the unorganized layout of his bookstore and his dependency on multiple employees. When Josie first meets Ryan, she has some strong opinions not only of his book taste but also about how he runs his store. As the two become better acquainted and transition from rivals to friends to lovers, there is pronounced, authentic character development for both characters—Josie evolves from a literary snob to someone who appreciates the value of romance fiction, while Ryan learns the value of structure and order and to not judge a book by its cover, especially in the case of Josie. Their anonymous online interactions give strong “you’ve got mail vibes” to the story—and although readers may guess where the story is headed, the banter and intimate exchanges provide a lot of intrigue and make readers want to root for their romance!

The vibrant setting in Boston’s Davis Square is the perfect backdrop to a story about the literary world—there’s a cinematic feel to the bookstores and street, especially when customers and side characters are popping in and out. There are numerous literary references in this book that will delight book lovers—including conversations about ARCs, book reviews, book tropes, and book panels! Even if you’re not a big romance reader, this story offers something interesting to book enthusiasts of all genres! The themes of the importance of community (especially a bookish one) and the transformative power of storytelling are seamlessly woven into the narrative, giving the story another layer of depth that book lovers will really appreciate!

Overall, The Battle of the Bookstores is a heartwarming and engaging romcom that will especially appeal to readers who love books about books! If you’ve enjoyed Ali Brady’s books before or are looking for your next entertaining summer romance read with all the feels, then don’t hesitate to grab a copy of this one! It’s sure to be one of the top romance books of the summer!
Narrator Performance

The audiobook of The Battle of the Bookstores is an engaging and heartfelt listen narrated by two incredibly talented, award-winning narrators, Karissa Vacker and Brandon Francis! Vacker brings protagonist Josie brilliantly to life with such emotional depth and charm as to make the character extremely lovable despite the character’s rigid and somewhat snobbish nature. There’s a lot of character growth for Josie in this story, and Vacker’s performance gets more expressive and vulnerable as the story unfolds, making for a very compelling listening experience.

Francis uses a much more relaxed, controlled voice infused with swagger and sarcasm to portray Ryan, making the character not only likable but swoon-worthy! The chemistry between these polar opposite characters is evident from the onset, and both narrators deliver engaging and entertaining dialogue scenes that will have listeners smiling and cheering on Josie and Ryan’s enemies-to-lovers romance.

Both narrators pace their performances perfectly and make the characters feel authentic. Even if you’re someone who likes to listen at a faster speed, you’ll find yourself slowing down the narration to absorb all the nuances of expression and superb acting skills the narrators have to offer throughout their performances.

Overall, this heartfelt and engaging rom-com is the perfect story for dual narration—and Karissa Vacker and Brandon both bring their A-game to elevate this story to quite possibly one of the best romance listens of the summer! If you’re considering reading this book, the audiobook is absolutely the best format to enjoy it! It’s an absolute must-listen for audiobook readers looking for the perfect summer romance or beach read!
