SYNOPSIS

Penelope Mae Dupont has one superpower: keeping her cool. Which is essential when you’re the personal assistant to renowned mystery author Hugh Griffin. But when Pip organizes a luxury book cruise featuring The Fabulous Seven–a glittering cast of seven bestselling authors known for both their brilliance and their drama–her trademark composure starts slipping. One boat. Seven egos. Hundreds of fans. What could possibly go wrong?

Well . . . murder, for starters.

On day two, Hugh is found dead–and the cruise security team proves to be utterly incompetent. Stranded in the middle of the Atlantic with no help in sight, Pip realizes if anyone’s going to solve the case, it’ll have to be her. And so, with her friend and ally Nash, the dreamy Western author who’s just as rugged as the cowboys he writes about, she puts her amateur sleuthing skills to the test.

As Pip and Nash navigate an ocean of secrets, shocking twists, and one too many red herrings, she’ll have to decide whether she’s meant to stay behind the scenes–or finally step into the spotlight . . . and maybe, just maybe, find love along the way.

REVIEW

What a cool, fun book this is! Its unique, genre-blending story combines a slow-burn romance with a classic whodunit murder mystery—all set aboard a cruise ship stranded in the middle of the ocean! With no escape and a killer hiding among the boat, it has locked-room mystery vibes where everyone is a suspect and secrets surface. It’s different from Melissa Ferguson’s usual rom-coms but just as engaging—if not more so—thanks to the immersive mystery and the ensemble cast of seven authors on a literary cruise—perfect for book lovers! Tropes fans will love it too: forced proximity, rivals-to-lovers tension, amateur sleuthing, closed-circle suspects, and hidden identities—all of which make this a bingeable read!

The story follows Penelope “Pip” Mae Dupont, personal assistant to famed mystery author Hugh Griffin and organizer of a literary cruise for the seven bestselling authors of the Magnificent Seven. What should be a glamorous trip turns deadly when a murder—and then another—occurs onboard. With a storm keeping the ship at sea, the authors are trapped together, each hiding secrets, rivalries, and possible motives. As suspicion grows, Pip takes charge, questioning them to uncover the truth before more bodies pile up.

The novel is told primarily through protagonist Penelope’s POV, letting readers get inside her mind as an intuitive amateur sleuth. Because she knows so much about each author in the group, she gives insight and backstory for all seven, while also sharing her insecurities, suspicions, and growing feelings for Nash, the charming Western author onboard. Nash becomes both her sleuthing partner and a prime suspect, adding tension to their slow-burn romance and making some of her choices questionable. The majority of the story revolves around Penelope questioning each author one-on-one after the murders. Every interrogation feels like a chess match—full of clever back-and-forth and subtext—with everyone hiding something, keeping the identity of the killer hard to figure out. Penelope’s personal arc is just as compelling—by the end, she has to confront her fear of never becoming a “real” writer, with a few twists of fate helping her out!

The short, punchy chapters keep the tension high and the story moving. While the mystery isn’t overly intricate and the structure feels a bit repetitive as Penelope interviews suspect after suspect, the witty dialogue and fun character dynamics keep it engaging. Some twists, including parts of the final reveal, are predictable, but the execution is so well done and entertaining that it doesn’t take away any enjoyment!

Overall, Without a Clue is a unique cozy mystery-romcom and another binge-worthy read from Melissa Ferguson. It’s perfect for anyone looking for something lighter than a full-on locked-room thriller but who still loves ensemble casts, bookish jargon, slow-burn romance, and amateur sleuth leads. If that sounds like your kind of story, this one definitely deserves a spot on your TBR!
Narrator Performance

The audiobook of Without a Clue is read by award-winning narrator Karissa Vacker, known for her work in rom-coms and mysteries and for her skill in bringing large casts of characters vividly to life.

Vacker gives protagonist Penelope an expressive, thoughtful voice that captures her curiosity, assertiveness, and tendency to overthink—especially in her inner monologues as she pieces together clues and grows suspicious of the people around her. For Hugh Griffin, the legendary mystery author who leads the group, Vacker uses a calm, confident tone that makes him sound authoritative and wise—perfect for someone viewed as an icon among the writers. Nash, the charming Western author and Penelope’s love interest, is given a swoony, relaxed voice with a slight Western drawl that fits his personality and is a nice contrast with Penelope, highlighting their opposites-attract chemistry. The dialogue between them feels easy and natural, conveying their mutual respect and long-standing friendship. As the story unfolds and Penelope realizes that everyone—including Nash—could be a suspect, Vacker subtly shifts the dynamic by making Penelope’s tone a little more clipped and anxious while adding a slight edge of mystery to Nash’s voice to keep listeners guessing. The rest of the authors are clearly differentiated as well, and Vacker makes Penelope’s one-on-one interrogations with them very compelling. Each interrogation scene is entertaining and helps listeners keep track of each author’s potential motives—and the performance often feels like a multicast production as every character sounds so real!

Toward the end, Vacker subtly shifts her performance of Penelope to reflect her growth—her voice is steadier and more confident, especially in the scenes where she begins trusting her instincts and puts the pieces of the mystery together. The epilogue has the feel-good vibes of a rom-com ending, and Vacker’s delivery makes it clear that Penelope has grown into someone who believes in her own voice, leaving listeners with a smile on their faces!

Listeners who enjoy cozy mysteries with strong, distinct characters, slow-burn romances, and narrators who bring a full cast of personalities to life—with nuance and dynamic expression to keep you fully engaged—will love this audiobook!
